There are 13 main Akharas recognized by the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad (ABAP), categorized into three main sects: Shaiva (Shiva worshippers), Vaishnava (Vishnu worshippers), and Udasin (followers of the path of Guru Nanak’s son).

1. Shaiva Akharas (Followers of Lord Shiva)

These Akharas are known for their Naga Sadhus (warrior ascetics) and strict austerity. They focus on the path of renunciation.

  1. Juna Akhara Lord DattatreyaThe largest and oldest. It is home to the highest number of Naga Sadhus and recently included the Kinnar Akhara (transgender monks).
  2. Niranjani AkharaLord KartikeyaThe most educated Akhara. Many of its monks hold PhDs and high academic degrees. Headquartered in Prayagraj.
  3. Mahanirvani AkharaSage KapilmuniResponsible for the worship at the famous Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga. Focuses on the “Maha Nirvana” or great liberation.
  4. Atal AkharaLord GaneshaOne of the most ancient. It emphasizes extreme discipline and traditionally only accepts members from certain lineages.
  5. Avahan AkharaLord DattatreyaKnown as the “First Responder” to Adi Shankaracharya’s call to form a defense for the faith.
  6. Anand AkharaSurya (Sun God)Established in 855 AD, it is known for its focus on Vedic education and refined cultural traditions.
  7. Panchagni AkharaGoddess GayatriUnique because its members are strictly Brahmachari (celibate) and do not use intoxicants or maintain a “dhuni” (fire pit).

2. Vaishnava Akharas (Followers of Lord Vishnu)

Also called Bairagi Akharas, these focus on Bhakti (devotional love) and the worship of Lord Rama, Krishna, and Hanuman.

  1. Nirmohi Ani Lord HanumanFamous for its role as the custodian of several historic temples. It represents the “attachment-less” warriors
  2. .Digambar AniLord RamaKnown for its grand camps at the Mela. They are often called the “Sky-Clad” (though they wear clothes, unlike Naga Babas).
  3. Nirvani AniLord VishnuEmphasizes the pursuit of spiritual wisdom and the role of the monk as a peaceful devotee.
